History

Picture
Augusta has a long history of survival and adaptation. When settlers arrived to Augusta in 1850 they lived without laws for 30 years until the townspeople finally realized they needed structure and a legal system. Due to the proximity of the river, Augusta soon became a trading center. However, due to environmental phenomenons and the way in which the river is curved, the river moved a few miles from the town. As a result, people from Augusta had to adapt to the new location of the river by finding new ways to transport goods by land to the new port. Today, where the Katy Trail is located used to by the original river bank.

The main farmhouse of the Reserve used to belong to the Buenemann family (picture on the left) who were farmers. Farmers in Augusta quickly found the soil was great for growing grapes for wine. After this discovery, the town flourished for many years as they provided St. Charles and St. Louis with wine. However, during the prohibition the town suffered yet another setback. Their major source of revenue was taken away from them and people had to find new ways to make a living.
